Support your child with their key word reading with the Year 2 Common Exception Words mat. Common Expection Words (CEM), sometimes known as Red Words, are considered 'tricky' as children cannot phonetically decode them, they have to be learnt by sight. This is a list of words children are commonly expected to be able to read and spell at the end of Year 2. Use this mat to help children recognise the word, and to practise reading and writing it. These wipeable mats can be used as a checklist for the sounds children do recognise.
